Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common, long lasting chronic,  autoimmune disease of skin characterized by red inflamed raised areas  with silvery scales .

 It mostly affects scalp, elbows, knees ,lower back ,palms and soles but it can affect any part of the body.

Psoriasis tends to go through cycles , flaring for a few weeks or months than subsiding of its own to flare up again 

Common Triggering factors include infections, cuts or burns, certain  medications and weather.

It can be with or without itching .

It is not contagious i.e. one can’t catch it  by shaking hands or swimming or using  patient’s belongings. 

More chronic the disease, the more difficult to treat.

People of any age ,sex or race can get psoriasis .

Common signs and symptoms of psoriasis-

  • Patchy rash that varies widely from person to person ranging from small spots of dandruff like scaling to major eruptions over most of body.
  • Silvery scales
  • Dry cracked skin that may bleed specially if palms and soles are affected 
  • Itching , burning or soreness of skin
  • Pitting of nails 
  • Joint pains 

It may be associated with pain in joints called psoriatic arthritis 

About 1 in 3 people diagnosed with psoriasis will also develop arthritis due to inflammation

Difference between Psoriasis and Eczema 

These are two different skin conditions . Both cause similar symptoms like discolored skin, a rash and itching .

Psoriasis cause areas of thick skin covered with scales whereas eczema causes a rash of dry and bumpy skin 

Eczema causes more severe itching than Psoriasis
